Best Movies of 2016

2017 is here and seems like it got plenty of good movies for us. Some of the most anticipated movies like Star Wars: Episode VIII, Justice League and the list can go on.
Before we start a new venture, let’s take a look on the movies of 2016 that made us proud. These movies told us that good movies still do exist. They have gained both critical and financial acclaim and are the very reason we are hoping so much from Hollywood even the following year.

1. La La Land

Box Office: $45.5 million

Cast: Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, John Legend

The movie had a solid cast to begin with. The movie is a musical comedy that follows the adventures of a musician and an aspiring actress who meet and fall in love in Los Angeles.

2. Arrival

Director: Denis Villeneuve

Release: September 1, 2016

IMDB Rating: 8.3/10

Box Office: $145.9 million

Cast: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, Tzi Ma

The movie had everything perfect, everything from storyline, atmosphere and performance of the cast.

And if you are wondering, the answer is no. Lois Lane and Hawkeye are not looking for Superman.

3. Zootopia

Director: Rich Moore, Byron Howard

Release: February 11, 2016

IMDB Rating: 8.1/10

Box Office: $1.024 billion

Cast: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, Nate Torrence, Bonnie Hunt

This movie is a miracle in the field of animated. It has exhibited flamboyant visuals and a thrilling plot. Even a fox and a rabbit can be best friends.

4. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Director: Gareth Edwards

Release: December 10, 2016

IMDB Rating: 8.1/10

Box Office: $706.1 million

Cast: Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen

The movie was liked by usual movie goers and the die-hard fans of the franchise. It did justice to the rest of the movies of the series.

5. Deadpool

Director: Tim Miller

Release: February 8, 2016

IMDB Rating: 8.1/10

Box Office: $783.1 million

Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano

It set the record of the most financially successful R rated movie after the passion of Christ.

The movie was true to its original content; it may not have a strong plotline but the humor and Deadpool’s 4th wall breaking filled for it.

6. The Jungle Book

Director: Jon Favreau

Release: February 8, 2016

IMDB Rating: 7.6/10

Box Office: $966.6 million

Cast: Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong’o, Scarlett Johansson

It is rare that remake of a classic live up to the hype of the original. This is one of those rare cases.

The visually striking movie narrates the story of young Mowgli who grows up in a forest. He is raised by a pack of wolves.

7. Finding Dory

Director: Andrew Stanton

Release: June 8, 2016

IMDB Rating: 7.5/10

Box Office: $1.028 billion

Cast: Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks, Hayden Rolence, Ed O’Neill

When nostalgia hits, it hits you hard. The sequel may have missed few marks but more or less it was as vibrating as the earlier one.

8. Silence

Director: Martin Scorsese

Release: November 29, 2016

IMDB Rating: 8.8/10

Box Office: $254,374

Cast: Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Tadanobu Asano, Liam Neeson

The movie retains the same religious nature as that of Martin’s earlier project, the last temptation of Christ. It has been listed among one of the best Martin’s work.

9. Doctor Strange

Director: Scott Derrickson

Release: Kevin Feige

IMDB Rating: 7.9/10

Box Office: $657.2 million

Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Mads Mikkelsen

The numbers of superhero movies are increasing each year, and this is not the last superhero movie on this list. The inclination is not only in the field of quantity but also quality.

Doctor strange is a brilliant example of psychedelic movie; the visuals are not only groundbreaking but are equally complex and catchy.

10. Batman v Superman: Dawn of justice

Director: Zack Snyder

Release: March 19, 2016

IMDB Rating: 6.8/10

Box Office: $873.3 million

Cast: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Gal Gadot

If you are confused after seeing this on the list, I won’t blame you. This is not the first time Zack Snyder has a put a movie that got polar reviews.

The movie was criticised for its dark tone, thin plot, cameos and focus on creating a shared universe, while many praised the movie for the same reason.

It was widely praised by the fans.
