Om Puri’s ‘Hundred Foot Journey’ No Longer Among Us – R.I.P

Everyone had high hopes from this year. We lost a lot of beloved celebrities last year, and we expected this year to be different. This year was supposed to be different; it was supposed to be better.
Barely a week has passed, and we lost one of the gems of the Bollywood.
The morning of 6th January bought the news that Om Puri is no longer among us. He suffered a heart attack earlier this morning and as a result, passed away.

He has played critical roles in some of the modern classics of Bollywood. His legacy transcended to Hollywood, he has acted in some of the highly critical Hollywood movies, alongside some of the biggest names of Hollywood.

Here are some of the movies that made him a big name in the entertainment industry.

1. Ardh Satya

Release: 19 August 1983

Director: Govind Nihalani

Cast: Om Puri, Smita Patil, Amrish Puri, Shafi Inamdar, Naseeruddin Shah

Genre: Drama

The film is considered one of the landmark movies of Bollywood. Even today, it is listed among the best cop movies. The film revolves around a cop who is trying to fight the evil elements of the society, while trying to overcome his limitations.

2. Gupt

Release: Rajiv Rai

Director: 4 July 1997

Cast: Bobby Deol, Manisha Koirala, Kajol, Om Puri

Genre: Mystery

The movie is known for its use of red herring. The film makes use of actors known for playing negative roles, thus successfully hiding the culprit in plain sight.

3. Lakshya

Release: 18 June 2004

Director: Farhan Akhtar

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, Sharad Kapoor

Genre: Coming of age

The film is about a young lad who has no aim in his life and is struggling to take any action regarding his life. It couldn’t perform well at the time of its release, but eventually it received the cult status.

4. Mirch Masala

Release: 13 February 1987

Director: Ketan Mehta

Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil, Om Puri, Suresh Oberoi, Deepti Naval, Dina Pathak

Genre: Drama

The film is set in the period when the country was still under the British rule. Forbes included Smita Patil’s performance in the film on its list, “25 Greatest Acting Performances of Indian Cinema”.

5. China Gate

Release: 27 November 1998

Director: Rajkumar Santoshi

Cast: Om Puri, Amrish Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Mukesh Tiwari, Danny Denzongpa, Mamta Kulkarni, Samir Soni

Genre: Adventure

The movie was a tribute to Akira Kurosawa’s work Seven Samurai. It narrates the story of ten officers who take the responsibility to rid a village from the terrors of dreadful dacoit, Jageera. The officers are the last hope for the villagers, although the officers were discharged from army for cowardice.

6.Mere Baap Pehle Aap

Release: 13 June 2008

Director: Priyadarshan

Cast: Akshaye Khanna, Genelia D’Souza, Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Rajpal Yadav

Genre: Comedy

The film is a comedic misadventure of a son trying to get his father gets married. The movie was a moderate success.

7. Dhoop

Release: 2003

Director: Ashwini Chaudhary

Cast: Om Puri, Revathi, Gul Panag, Sanjay Suri, Yashpal Sharma

Genre: Drama

The film depicts the family of Anuj Nayyar, who passes away as a martyr at the Tiger hill. The movie received critical acclaim for the realistic depiction of how a family goes through after losing a son to war.

8. Malamaal Weekly

Release: 10 March 2006

Director: Priyadarshan

Cast: Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Ritesh Deshmukh, Reema Sen, Rajpal Yadav

Genre: Comedy

Om puri was a respected artist for many reasons. One of the reasons was his ability to adapt to any genre; he was as funny in a comedy movie as he was serious in a drama flick.

9. East IS East

Release: 5 November 1999

Director: Damien O’Donnell

Cast: Om Puri, Linda Bassett, Jordan Routledge, Archie Panjabi, Chris Bisson

Genre: Comedy, Drama

The movie revolves around a Pakistani immigrant who moves to Britain deals with his daily life where his children deny taking on their native culture and follows the British culture.

10. Charlie Wilson’s War

Release: December 21, 2007

Director: Mike Nichols

Cast: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Ned Beatty

Genre: Comedy, drama

Om puri shared a movie with actors like Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Amy Adams. It is an achievement in itself.
